Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a mental health promotion program in order to reinforce the resilience of soldiers dispatched overseas whom are exposed to high risk environments while executing dangerous operations.

Method: There were three steps to the research. First, the soldiers¡¯ stress levels, stress management program, and theoretical program were examined. Second, research was carried out on the demand for mental health promotion program aimed for the returning dispatched soldiers. Third, the content of the program was composed on the basis of the analysis of literature review and the results of research on demand.

Results: The programs consisted of five subjects and ten sessions, and materials and tasks were developed so that they could be applied in both a clinical setting and in the field. This program was aimed at improving the soldiers¡¯ resilience, focusing on the decrease of risk factors and the development of protection factors. At first there was a session to examine self, family, comrades, environment, and confirmed dysfunctional thinking. Additionally, cognitive reorganization training to replace distorted thinking, achievement of effective interpersonal skills and communication skills, and the discovery of merit and potential for oneself are included.

Conclusion: Through the program development tried in this study, we would like to suggest the following. First, the need to apply the mental health improvement program developed by the present study for the troops dispatched overseas and analyze the effects. Second, the need for a training program for the commanding officers or expert counselors to provide the arbitration program for the troops dispatched overseas. Third, to identify the effectiveness of this program in connection with the regional characteristics and the types of mission, need to develop the differentiated arbitration accordingly.
